FISHING
Background
Some members of the group have visited a number of locations including Aldin Grange, Grassholme Reservoir in Teesdale, Eden Meadows and Paradise Witton-Le-Wear Lakes.

Neil Stoker, a member of LEAPS has been the most successful in terms of the number of fish caught (7 at Grassholme) and the heaviest catch -a 5lb 9oz trout!
Neil says:
‘I love fishing! ‘It’s great being outdoors in the fresh air, even when it rains,
although we’ve been really lucky with the weather most times we’ve been,
I was able to bring one of the fish I caught back home, but usually you have to put them back’.
‘You pay for a licence for a day. They provide bait - maggots and worms and fishing rods. They show you how to use them and stay around to help out if necessary. The people are very helpful’.
‘I’m really looking forward to the next trip Bet I can beat you next time Jim!’
‘I would love to have a go at fly fishing.’
Neils rating – Grassholme - 5 star rating
‘That’s my favourite place as it’s so picturesque!’
Wear Valley Angling
Wear Valley Angling is a newly formed organisation in County Durham, which provides an opportunity for people to experience coarse and fresh water fishing. All equipment
needed for the day is provided. All that you need to provides warm water proof clothing and a packed lunch.
It gives people an opportunity to participate in the sport and find out what it has to offer. Many people describe fishing as sitting for hours at the river bank waiting for a bite. When you try the Wear Valley angling experience it is not just about fishing, you will learn about nature with its animal sounds, smells from trees, plants, and its surrounding wild life.
Dedicated support and tuition is given through out the day by the experienced staff that has a wealth of knowledge about the lake / river, and its natural environment. Over the past year Wear Valley Angling has held several pilot fishing day trips for people with special needs.
These pilot sessions were very successful, resulting in the organisation being awarded a spot day care contract with Durham County Council. This means that Wear Valley Angling are one of only a small number of organisations who are approved by the county council to carry out this service for people with disabilities.
This offers an excellent opportunity for people with disabilities to experience a day out fishing by the waterside, and learning about bird sounds and what nature has to offer. Click here for more information. www.wearvalleyangling.co.uk/
