NEW AGE KURLING
Background
New Age Kurling has been a regular activity since LEAPS began. To a large extent this is due to the close links between LEAPS and Blind Life IN Durham, who have been involved with this activity for a number of years.
New Age Kurling is based on the sport Ice Curling, a game founded in Scotland which was played with flat round pudding stones on frozen lakes, and a more updated version is now played at the winter Olympics. New Age Kurling however is relatively new, having been designed for people with disabilities.
New Age Kurling is played on any flat wooden floor, usually covering the area of a badminton court, and uses plastic ‘stones’ with ball bearings on the bottom of each 'stone' to ensure smooth gliding across the floor.
LEAPS are now registered with the Great Britain Kurling Association, and a few of our members have taken part in competitions.
Members also take part in fundraising events against professionals from local organisations such as the fire brigade, the police, the local criminal justice board, Durham County Council's executive team and others. In these event, the able bodied professionals have to be blind folded and guided to the start line before each take their turn. There is an annual trophy, medals for the winners and a prize for the team with the best designed blindfolds. This has proven to be an excellent means of fundraising.
Very accessible activity due to the range of delivery options, including a ramp, a pusher or even by hand, making it suitable for everybody.
