What is LEAPS?
The Lead to Encourage Activities, Participation and Sport (LEAPS) club was developed in 2007 in partnership with 2D Voluntary and Community Support and Wear Valley Council’s Inclusive Fitness Initiative.
The club, based in Crook, County Durham has members with a wide range of disabilities and aims to encourage disabled people living in County Durham to participate in activities and sport.
What does LEAPS do?
LEAPS meets monthly to plan and manage activities that are normally inaccessible to disabled people due to their availability, cost or lack of special adaptations.
Members regularly take part in New Age Kurling, Archery, Angling, Ten Pin Bowling, and more recently a programme of led walks, demonstrating that people of all disabilities can, and do, take part in a wide range of sports.
Through our club’s social activities we have built friendships and increased confidence within individuals to enable them to have a more willing attitude to new activities and sport.
LEAPS actively seeks to encourage organisations and assist sporting venues to make the relevant adjustments that enable more disabled people to participate in activities and sports.
This website highlights the different activities and sports that are accessible for disabled people in County Durham and North East England promoting Sport England’s Mission - "To foster a healthier, more successful nation through increased investment in sport and active recreation."
